Medical microneedling – what is it, and how can everyone aged 25 years and over benefit from it?

Medical microneedling is used by many people to help reduce a variety of common concerns, including: fine lines and wrinkles, skin laxity, pigmentation and sun damage.

Although it’s frequently performed on patients who wish to improve their facial appearance, it can also work well on the body and reduce the look of stretch-marks.

This popular treatment is also known as ‘collagen induction therapy’ and is an effective way of rejuvenating the complexion. Takroni Clinic uses the Dermapen device to carry out their medical microneedling procedure. This convenient hand-held implement can be administered precisely to the affected area of skin. As it glides over the surface, it creates a series of tiny puncture wounds, which we refer to as micro-channels and are the key to the way this treatment works.

Creating micro-channels are a way of causing controlled trauma to the skin. The body will then respond by kick-starting the repair process; part of which involves the production of new collagen and elastin. Now we all know how important these naturally occurring proteins are in maintaining firm, full and supple skin. So by increasing their levels, we can restore the complexion’s youthful properties.

Medical microneedling is often thought of as a safe and effective anti-ageing treatment that may be useful to adults over 40. In fact Takroni Clinic would consider using medical microneedling on adults of all ages, as it can benefit anyone from the age of 25.

The ageing process happens to everyone, causing a range of concerns, including: lines and wrinkles, thin skin, sagging skin and pigmentation. These conditions occur because collagen and elastin decrease from within the skin, and will progress further over time. Many people will start to become aware of the development of these concerns from the age of 30+. However, the ageing process has probably been happening for some time.

Collagen and elastin is made in the middle layers of the skin. From as young as our 20’s the body will slow down their production, and as they are designed to naturally break down, their levels will slowly decline. For most people this will progress at a rate of 1-1.5% each year. However, there are some lifestyle or environmental factors that can speed up the process, including: smoking, sun exposure, air pollution, alcohol, lack of hydration and a poor diet. Therefore, if microneedling is used as early as 25+, it can work to top up collagen as it breaks down – and maintain your youthful complexion for longer.
