What Are Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks appear as streaks or lines on the skin, ranging from pink or purple to white or silver in colour. They often develop in areas where the skin has stretched rapidly, such as the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, breasts, and upper arms. It is common with weight gain, growth and post pregnancy. Stretch marks are common in both men and women but can affect one’s confidence due to the uneven texture and colour particularly when visible in areas exposed by clothing or swimwear.
What Causes Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks, also known as striae, form when the skin is stretched beyond its elastic capacity, causing the collagen and elastin fibres in the dermis to rupture. Rapid weight gain, growth spurts during puberty, pregnancy, hormonal changes, and certain medical conditions such as Cushing’s syndrome can all contribute to their development. Genetics also play a role, as some individuals are more predisposed to stretch marks than others. The resulting marks initially appear as red or purple streaks due to blood vessel dilation, fading over time to a lighter hue. While not harmful, stretch marks can impact aesthetic appearance, prompting individuals to seek treatments to minimise their visibility.
How Can I Treat Stretch Marks?
At Takroni Clinic we use medical microneedling to help improve the appearance of stretch marks. This treatment works by promoting collagen and elastin production, enhancing skin elasticity and texture. During the procedure, fine needles create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating the body’s natural healing response. This triggers the production of new collagen and elastin, which helps to fill in and smoothen the stretch marks. Over time, as the skin heals and remodels, the stretch marks become less noticeable, resulting in improved skin texture and a reduction in their appearance. Multiple sessions of microneedling may be required to achieve optimal results.
