What Are Enlarged Pores?
The pores are small openings of the follicles on the surface of the skin, covering every area of the face and body with a sebaceous gland beneath them. The job of the pores is to allow the skin to secrete sweat and sebum (oil), as well as being connected to hair follicles. The pores are mostly unseen unless they become enlarged when they can then appear as small dots on the complexion. When people talk about enlarged pores, they are usually referring to the ones that are visible on the face, especially around the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin.
What Causes Enlarged Pores?
There are a number of reasons why the pores become enlarged. As the skin ages, it loses collagen and elastin which contributes to lax skin including more lax pores that appear larger. Exposure to the sun’s rays can speed up the rate at which collagen declines, increasing the likelihood of enlarged pores as well premature ageing and pigmentation. People who are affected by oily skin usually produce excess sebum, another cause of enlarged pores which may also contribute to frequent blockages when mixed with everyday dirt and debris. Genetics can also play their part, with those that have thicker more oily skin experiencing generally larger and more visible pores on certain areas of the face.

A recommended medical grade skincare regime plays a central role in maintaining skin that is in good condition and functions well.
