What Are Breakouts?
Breakouts or acne refers to the appearance of spots and pimples on the skin. There are 6 different types of spots, and they range from inflamed spots such as pustules (whiteheads), deeper cysts or nodules or blocked pores and comedones (blackheads). Breakouts may also affect the chest, shoulders and back. Breakouts affect up to 85% of the population at some point in their life, more commonly during teenage and young adult years. However, breakouts can also often start during adult years related to a combination of internal and potentially external factors affecting up to 40% of adult women. Breakouts at any point in life can significantly impact a someone’s confidence and lead them to seek effective treatments to help keep breakouts and the marks or scars that may remain at bay.
What Causes Breakouts?
Breakouts are caused by a combination of factors including a genetic predisposition and a change in hormones. Change in hormones leads to excess oil production which is part of the reason breakouts start to occur. A combination of excess oil production, increased levels of certain bacteria on the skin or sensitivity to normal bacteria and sluggish shedding of dead skin cells from within the follicle leads to the formation of a spot. During your teenage years breakouts are more likely to impact the T-zone, however in adulthood, acne may localise more to lower cheeks and chin, especially around your period. Other external factors such as diet, stress and change in topical products may also impact the likelihood of breakouts.
