What Is An Ageing Neck?
Many adults will experience the appearance of an ageing neck, starting sometimes as early as late 30’s and more noticeable in their 40’s or 50’s. This concern usually affects the look of the skin, as it begins to look more crepey and loose. The skin around the neck starts to become an area of concern fairly early as skin here is thinner than the face (apart from the eye area) and it is often neglected when it comes to skincare and treatments. As with general ageing, typical characteristics vary from person to person. Therefore, for some people an ageing neck can lead to neck bands (horizontal creases that run across the neck), or sagging skin beneath the chin, which can be perceived as a double chin. For others it can appear as a crepey texture focused on the centre of the neck and extending up towards the lower face and decolletage over time.
What Causes An Ageing Neck?
Many ageing-related concerns are associated with the changing structure of the skin as we age. The loss of collagen and elastin plays a big part in skin ageing, which can occur at a rate of 1 – 1.5% each year; beginning when a person is in their mid-20’s. As the menopause hits collagen depletes 6 times quicker than before accelerating the appearance of an ageing neck. Youthful skin is firm, buoyant and full; properties that decline as collagen and elastin depletes. This results in skin that becomes more crepey and dull and a neck and jawline area that appears to be sagging. The neck area is also commonly forgotten when it comes to applying skincare such as SPF and an area that patients may choose not to prioritise for treatments until the problem becomes harder to address non-surgically. The neck may be further impacted by the regular use of devices causing more prominent horizontal lines as we look down for prolonged periods of time. It is also impacted by the fat pads in the face which descend downwards over time towards the neck leading to a less defined jawline and lower face.
How Can I Treat An Ageing Neck?
Takroni clinic can approach an ageing neck in a variety of ways, depending on your individual concerns. In some cases, sagging skin around the neck can be lifted by providing the face with extra volume and support using dermal fillers in the cheeks, temples and along the chin and jawline. Skin quality treatments such as Profhilo, skin smoothing mesotherapy boosters, Forma radiofrequency tightening, Morpheus8 and medical microneedling can improve the quality of the skin and tighten the appearance of the neck area. By applying our anti-wrinkle treatment, the neck muscles relax, and their movement is softened, which reduces the appearance of vertical neck banding which can otherwise pull down the jowl area. Maintaining strong and healthy skin is also achieved through the use of medical grade skin care and regular medical grade facials. Our team of clinicians and therapists can help guide you through our recommended treatments to help address your neck area.
