What Is Sensitive Skin?
Many people refer to their skin being sensitive when it is found to be easily irritated. In these circumstances the skin on various areas of the face or body may become inflamed, causing the skin to change in texture and tone. Common symptoms can include redness, itching, spots, a rash, dry skin, flaky skin or hives (urticaria).
This concern can affect people in different ways (depending on the individual) with around 50% of women feeling they have sensitive skin, compared to 40% of men.
What Causes Sensitive Skin?
In almost all cases of sensitive skin, its cause is down to the skin coming into contact with a substance or condition that it cannot tolerate at that point in time. This may include materials or fabrics (such as latex or wool), cleaning products, washing detergent, soaps, creams, cosmetics / make-up, fragrances, sun, wind and air pollution. Sensitive skin may be genetic, and certain medical conditions can mean the skin is more reactive, such as for those who are affected by eczema, psoriasis or rosacea. In some cases, due to the overuse of topical products that are not ideal for their skin type a person finds that they experience more sensitivity due their natural skin barrier being weaker.
How Can It Be Treated?
At Takroni Clinic our team of highly trained clinicians and therapists can work with you to improve your skin barrier to minimise the sensitivity you are experiencing. We will be able to carefully look at the products you are using and recommend a medical grade skin care regime that is more suited to your sensitive skin type. We advise to avoid known triggers to prevent a reaction and gradually building your tolerance to products that may be effective but should be started slowly especially if you suffer from more sensitive skin. As your skin becomes less reactive, we can also introduce in clinic treatments to optimise your skin health such as medical grade facials, HydraFacial’s, Lumecca and medical microneedling.
